Ramon “Mongo” Santamaria was undoubtedly one of the most respected conga players ever and a pioneer of modern Latin jazz. In the 1950s, his band “Black Cuban Diamonds” laid the foundation for a remarkable career. Ramon recorded dozens of legendary percussion albums. Worldwide jazz hits such as “Watermelon Man” in 1963 and the album “Summertime” from 1980 are just two of the many recordings of this great master percussionist. Mongo inspired more percussionists around the world than any other conguero. Mongo Santamaria passed away at Baptist Hospital in Miami, USA, in February 2003. He was 85 years old. With great appreciation and the deepest respect, we honour our friend and his life's work with his series of MEINL Mongo Santamaria Congas.
