The Japanese company was founded in 1962, but it became globally recognized in the recording industry in 1991 with the launch of the legendary microphone AT4033, which is still in production today and is constantly used in major recording studios around the world. The reason the 4033 has made its way into the top of professional studio microphones is its extraordinary price/quality ratio - recordings made with such a microphone are of the same quality as recordings made with microphones five times more expensive, such as Neumann, if used by an experienced engineer. Notable users of the 4033 include Tom and Chris Lord-Alge, Alan Parsons, Phil Ramone, and Ed Cherney.
Audio-Technica has maintained the same level of quality from 1991 to the present, while also expanding the range of products offered to include dynamically microphones (such as the excellent Midnight Blue and Pro series), and has launched a series of other microphones based on the 4033, such as AT4040 (with permanently polarized diaphragm), AT4050 (multi-pattern microphone), and AT4047 (with cathode tube - "tube"), as well as more affordable studio microphones that maintain the specific Audio-Technica quality - these include AT2020, AT2010, AT3035, and AT3060 ("tube"), which have made a name for themselves in the home recording and project studio industry worldwide. The M20-M50 headphone series from AT has also quickly gained recognition, being used in studios for tracking and monitoring, as well as the DJ headphones from the PRO5V series by DJs.
One of the reasons for the consistent quality offered by AT is the Japanese manufacturer's decision not to move production to China, like many others, with almost all Audio Technica products, including headphones, being produced in its own factories in Japan and Taiwan, under strict quality control following the Japanese model.
