Benny Greb: Is it a shaker? A pitched hi-hat sample? Is it a crasher percussion effect? No, they are Crasher Hats. I wanted something very short, dry, clear, and with a high frequency, yet still very dynamic, that could serve a similar role to a splash in music. Hard to achieve! So we had to create something completely unique. Four separate cymbals, placed together. They have different shoulders, so they crash against each other with every hit. The result is incredible. A very unique sound that blends beautifully with ghost notes and other subdivisions, but can also make a very punchy statement. It always sounds perfect without any unwanted noise or sustain sound. You can hear it on all my recent recordings and it has become part of my sound. Check it out. It’s such a useful instrument.
