Hokema Sansula Renaissance – Kalimba with 9 tines, pre-tuned to A minor, with a resonant membrane face. The Sansula is a modern development of the Kalimba (also known as Sansa or Mbira), an instrument with origins in southern Africa.
Kalimbas are instruments with metal tines that are plucked with fingers or thumbs. In Africa, they exist in a multitude of shapes and variations, where the vibrations of the tines are amplified in various ways (for example, through a resonating box, a hollow body like a calabash gourd, or simply a solid piece of wood).
In the Sansula, the vibration of the tines is first "stored" in a block of wood, which then transfers it to a sound membrane. In this way, the sound lasts much longer than with other methods of acoustic amplification. Supported by the special tuning – with close octaves – a wonderful, delicate sound rich in harmonics is achieved, which can be easily produced from the instrument.
