Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig v2, multi-effect pedal for electric guitar, developed in close collaboration with Richie Kotzen. Since the debut of the original RK5 in 2014, Richie’s needs have changed, both on tour and off. Therefore, Tech 21 has developed version 2.
RK5 v2 includes the same delay with tap tempo, powerful boost, and OMG Richie’s Signature overdrive. The new version includes an independent reverb, a rotary speaker mode, compressor, fuzz, a tuner, speaker output, and XLR output.
Boost + Compression:
Independent pre-Boost for solos of approximately 12 dB
Switchable compression, fully analog, 50-60s FET technology, warmer, more transparent, and more musical than other compression methods
OMG Overdrive + Fuzz:
The OMG overdrive is based on Richie Kotzen’s signature OMG pedal and offers a wide range of overdrive, from clean to aggressive tones. It has controls for Drive and Tone with adjustments for mid and low frequencies.
The Fuzz switch changes the character and attack of the overdrive to a thicker, fuzzier tone
SansAmp Analog:
Allows direct connection of the RK5 to mixers, recording consoles, PA systems. This section includes a 3-band active EQ and level and drive controls. It has a focused sound on clean tones in the spectrum of tube amplifiers. The Drive, Boost, OMG functions can be applied separately or simultaneously.
Reverb + Tuner:
Independent, foot-switchable reverb with a single infinitely variable control knob. It can switch between reverbs of different room sizes.
The chromatic tuner is accessed via the Reverb/Tuner switch by long-pressing the switch
Delay + Roto with Tap Tempo:
Vintage tape echo delay with Time and Repeats controls and a dedicated Tap Tempo switch. The Drift control adds a random element to modulation, honouring vintage roots.
Roto changes the Delay into a rotary speaker effect, and Tap Tempo controls the speed. Drift controls the distance of the virtual microphone from the rotary speaker, adding a tremolo effect by modulating the volume in sync with tonal modulation.
1 x 1/4” instrument input, impedance 1 MOhm
XLR output with ground lift
1/4” low impedance output
Speaker switch, switches the 1/4” output to speaker output
The device is very good, the sound settings are great. It's nice that you can adjust the volume of Clean/Distortion/Boost so that the balance fits. Reverb and Delay are also excellent.
If you hold down the middle button, there's also a tuner integrated, so you can quickly check the tuning in between.
I rate the RK5 Fly Rig v2 from Tech21 with 5 stars. A small downside in my opinion is that the power supply cable is a bit short.
