A wireless microphone seems like a simple choice—until you start comparing models: handheld or lavalier, analogue or digital, single or dual channel, and which frequency band you need to “coordinate.” The good news is, the real question isn’t “which is the best,” but “what will I use it for, and in what environment?”—and from there, the choice becomes clear.
This guide is for anyone moving from wired to wireless: presenters, vocalists, bands, content creators. First question: What do you hold or wear?
The microphone’s form factor is all about how you use it. A handheld mic is for vocals held in the hand: singers, podium presenters, karaoke, or anyone passing the mic around. A lavalier (classic lapel mic) or headset keeps your hands free: ideal for presenters who gesture, theatre, fitness, or teaching. For filming and vlogging, there’s a new category: small clip-on mics, magnetically attached, that transmit directly to your phone or camera.
All these share the same hidden structure: a transmitter (in the mic or on your belt) and a receiver. For stage systems, the receiver sits by the mixer or speaker; for filming, it clips onto your phone or camera. Remember the transmitter-receiver pair—that’s what you’re buying as a set.
Second question: Analogue UHF or digital 2.4 GHz?
This is the real technical decision, and it’s not always obvious. Analogue UHF systems (most stage models, like Shure BLX) transmit on UHF spectrum channels you select and reserve, with long range (up to 90–100 metres line-of-sight), and have been the standard for events for years. They do require some care: you’ll need to scan for a free channel (even for a single mic), and if you use several, you must coordinate frequencies so they don’t interfere. Some UHF bands are regulated, so it’s worth checking which bands are license-free before buying.
Digital 2.4 GHz systems (same band as WiFi) connect almost automatically, with no frequency coordination, and are license-free—making them the go-to for content creators. The trade-off: range drops quickly with walls, people, or obstacles, and the 2.4 GHz band is crowded in places full of phones and networks. There’s also a middle ground: digital systems on UHF (like Shure SLXD), which combine clean, encrypted digital sound with the range and stability of UHF—these are the professional choice for large events.
Handheld systems for stage and vocals
If you need a reliable handheld mic, the standard most people start with is the Shure BLX24 with SM58 capsule: an analogue UHF system, with the BLX4 receiver and a handheld transmitter fitted with the same SM58 capsule used on stages worldwide. It’s one of our best-selling handheld systems. Up to 91 metres range line-of-sight, automatic frequency scan, up to 14 hours on two AA batteries, XLR and jack outputs for any mixer or speaker. If you’re filming, vlogging, or podcasting, your needs are different: you don’t need a receiver by a mixer, but one that clips onto your phone or camera. What else matters before you buy
A few details separate a good purchase from a frustrating one. Number of channels: do you need one mic or two (duet, moderator plus guest)? If you might expand, start with a system that supports multiple units in parallel. Batteries: most stage systems use two AA batteries (always keep a spare set at events), while creator systems have built-in batteries and a charging case. Range: the quoted numbers are “line-of-sight”—range drops with walls and people, especially on 2.4 GHz, so don’t buy right at your limit. A radio signal travels best in a straight line, so keep the receiver in line of sight of the mic and as high as possible; walls, bodies, and metal objects between them can cause brief dropouts. And for stage use, think about where the signal goes: the receiver connects to your mixer or speaker via XLR or jack, just like a wired mic.
