A power amplifier drives passive speakers — those without a built-in amplifier. The correct choice starts with two numbers: power (in watts) and the impedance of the speakers (in ohms). The amplifier must deliver the appropriate power for the connected speakers at their impedance — an undersized amplifier distorts the sound and can damage the speakers, while an oversized one is just a waste of money if you don't use it to capacity.
Stereo amplifiers drive two channels (two speakers) independently — the standard option for simple sound reinforcement. The 'bridge' mode combines the two channels into a single, more powerful one for a subwoofer or a large speaker. Class D is the modern choice for efficiency and low weight — a Class D amplifier is much easier to transport than a Class AB of the same power, with much lower heat loss.
