The djembe is an African-origin instrument shaped like a goblet, equipped with a skin membrane on one end that is struck by hand and can be tuned with a cord. It is said that the djembe has three souls: the soul of the tree from which the instrument's body is made, the soul of the animal whose skin serves as the resonating membrane, and the soul of the craftsman who built the instrument.
