Active or passive? Active speakers have a built-in amplifier: you connect them to a mixer or a laptop and play, without power calculations and without an amplifier rack. They are the natural choice for bands, DJs, and mobile events. Passive speakers require a separate amplifier, but allow for larger, easily expandable and maintainable systems, which is why they remain preferred in fixed installations and by sound companies.

The 12"–15" models (Presonus AIR 10 and AIR XD 15, Yamaha DBR 12, LD Systems ICOA 12A BT) handle larger rooms and bands with drums.
