An electronic organ for beginners, meaning a portable keyboard with 61 keys, is the simplest and cheapest way to start playing: it has piano and other instrument sounds, accompaniment rhythms, a metronome, and built-in lessons, runs on mains or batteries, and fits on any desk. It is the instrument with which most children start at ages 5–6, and it is equally suitable for adults who want to learn at home.
How to choose:
- For children aged 4–7: compact keyboards with smaller keys, such as the Yamaha PSS-E30 Remie or PSS-F30: lightweight, with sounds and games that keep the child engaged with the instrument.
- First real instrument: Yamaha PSR-F52, by far the best-selling model in the store over the past two years, or Casio CT-S100: 61 standard-sized keys, hundreds of sounds and rhythms.
- For those taking lessons: choose a model with touch-sensitive keys, such as the Yamaha PSR-E383 or Roland E-X10. The teacher will require this: without touch-sensitive keys, you won't learn to control the volume with your fingers.
- If the budget allows: the Yamaha PSR-E4xx/E5xx series offers stronger speakers, more styles, and recording functionality. For classical piano, look directly for a digital piano with 88 hammer-action keys.
What else you need: a stand (the Gravity KSX-2 is among the best-selling), a sustain pedal, and a case if the instrument travels to lessons. You can find these in the categories below.
