The mandola is the deeper sister of the mandolin, tuned a fifth lower, mainly used as an accompanying instrument. The Greek and Irish bouzouki, with a longer neck, is played in folk and Irish bands, often alongside the mandolin. For a first instrument in this family, a classic Portuguese mandolin remains the simplest and cheapest choice.
