Triton Audio FetHead is a preamplifier for dynamic and ribbon microphones. FetHead has very low noise and connects directly to the microphone. Small, compact, yet powerful, FetHead uses FET technology to provide up to 27 dB of clean boost.

FetHead connects directly to any microphone equipped with an XLR connector or anywhere in the signal path between the microphone and preamplifier/mixer. The electronic components are integrated into a robust metal housing, with a balanced XLR female input and a balanced XLR male output. The sturdy construction makes FetHead suitable for home use, in the studio, or on tour.

FetHead significantly improves the sound of microphones; a Shure SM57, for example, sounds more responsive across a wider frequency range. And when used together with high-quality dynamic microphones, such as a Sennheiser MD441 or Shure SM7B, FetHead truly shines.

Ribbon microphones also benefit from improved sound due to a much better impedance matching. The FetHead reduces the load on the microphone, providing better transient response. Some older ribbon microphones do not tolerate Phantom Power; however, FetHead uses Phantom Power to power its circuits but does not pass it on to the microphone, thus protecting ribbon microphones from unwanted accidents.

A must-have for dynamic microphones

I recommend this preamp for dynamic microphones with low sensitivity and/or interfaces/recorders that don't have very good internal preamps.
Is it necessary for any setup? Certainly not, but it offers flexibility to have it since you can use any interface or recorder anywhere, no longer depending on an integrated preamp with very low noise.
This FetHead DOES NOT work with condenser microphones because phantom power is not present at the input (where the microphone connects). Triton Audio also has a dedicated FetHead Phantom for condenser microphones, but these usually don't require additional amplification since they have a FET amplifier right next to the capsule.

Satisfied

I have a Rode Procaster and the audio interface couldn't handle the gain.

Discreetly Fantastic Utility

If you have a Shure SM 7B or another dynamic microphone and want to be heard - Fet Head is a must :) I'm glad that SoundCreation takes care to offer products for those on a budget - I watched CloudLifter for a while, but it seemed a bit much (almost half the price of an SM7B). When I saw the FetHead on the site, I didn't hesitate, plus you don't need any other XLR cables (you plug it directly into the USB interface or the microphone). Once connected and phantom power activated, you won't need to raise the gain too much, you'll have a clean sound and the urge to record vocals :) In the case of the Shure SM 7B, there will be a slight hiss (but that's from the microphone and you'll only notice it at high volume in the headphones). As a side notes: Andi Moisescu uses FetHead for SM7Bs in his video podcast. I've also used it on radio broadcasts for Shure SM7B and ElectroVoice RE 320 and it's very helpful. Very useful for those who have recorders (it helps a lot in the case of a Zoom H5 which can add some noise on the preamp). Happy recording! :)
