Active or passive? Active speakers have a built-in amplifier: you connect them to a mixer or a laptop and play, without power calculations and without an amplifier rack. Passive speakers require a separate amplifier, but allow for larger, easily expandable and maintainable systems, which is why they remain preferred in fixed installations and by sound companies.
