The Boss ML-2 is a high-gain pedal with a harmonic distortion content focused on the high end.
It features a tone knob for low frequency and one for high frequency. Both adjustments primarily allow for the amplification of the respective frequency. They also have a cut function, but to a lesser extent than amplification. So, you get the perfect scooped mids tone specific to metal.
Due to this behavior, it is recommended to use a good quality EQ after the pedal to have the option for complex adjustment of the low-mid, mid-high, and high frequencies.
It seems complicated, but I don't know many pedals in the world that offer this precise and dry wide harmonic palette at such a low level of background noise and with zero latency... It is very dynamic because of the above.
Beginners won't know how to use this pedal to its true potential.
You can also introduce:
1. Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive Waza Craft for a creamy and robotic sound at the same time. It favors the mids.
2. Boss CP-1X compressor/sustainer to maintain controlled compression on a clear sound with controlled attack at the output from the compressor and input into the Boss ML-2 set with distortion almost at minimum. This results in a unique versatile form of distortion that is impossible to describe in words. Neutral tonal.
3. Boss BD-1 Blues Driver Waza Craft resulting in a brutal distortion form with a brutal attack that is preserved. It favors the lows.
This pedal is unique in its way, and I find that slowly but surely it is becoming my favorite.
