The darbuka or darabana is a percussion instrument originating from North Africa, which later spread to the Middle East. The body of the darbuka is made of metal (often aluminum), but traditionally it is also made from ceramic or wood. The most common membrane diameter is 8", but there are also 9" (sombaty), 10" (doholla), and 11" (bass doholla) sizes. Very rarely, a 12" version is made.
