M-Audio Fast Track Ultra

15.01.2008

Coming soon is what has already been heard for some time in unofficial versions. It seems that this will be one of the hottest USB solutions in the range.
Fast Track Ultra has 8 inputs and as many outputs, of which 6 (!) are analog. And 4 of the 6 inputs have preamps! The maximum resolution is 24bit/96kHz, which is not the highest figure, but let's be honest: who records in a project studio at 192kHz? In addition to the already "standard" features (MIDI 1x1, S/PDIF I/O stereo), it also has a quite practical feature: it has two headphone outputs, both separately amplified. This way, recordings can be made in the same room where both the artist and the sound engineer are present.
One downside might be that it has only two DSP effects: delay and reverb. Anyway, the reverb from the DSP probably cannot compare with a quality reverb (reverb being the most complex effect available).

In conclusion, these effects are not intended to be used in mixing. If the effects are not made for mixing, they should only be thought of for monitoring (e.g., the vocalist should not hear their raw voice over the backing track). But then why is it not better equipped with a compressor, which is much more important than reverb?
However, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, as the device will likely hit the market only around March, and the information available now may not yet be final.
