The Afro-Brazilian archetype of this shaker consists of the body of a small gourd, to which a handle is attached. The shape and function of the MEINL Percussion fiberglass Cabasa are equivalent to a traditional calebash. The fiberglass material makes it very durable.
There are practically two ways to play the cabasa:
One is to place the opening and your slightly rounded palm on the bead collars and rotate the handle with jerky movements.
In the other playing technique, the cabasa is held in the hand by the handle, so that the handle is vertical and the cylindrical head is horizontal. By shaking the cabasa back and forth, the bead collars that do not fully adhere strike the front and, respectively, the back of the cabasa.
